UNDERSTANDING HYPNOTHERAPY

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to reach a state of heightened awareness, often referred to as a trance. In this state, the analytical mind steps back, allowing us to communicate more directly with the subconscious—the part of the mind where our automatic patterns, deep-seated beliefs, and emotional responses reside.

By working at this deeper level, we can begin to identify the root causes of current challenges and introduce new, supportive perspectives. It is not about losing control or being "made" to do something; rather, it is a credible, evidence-based modality used to facilitate meaningful behavioral shifts and personal growth. Whether applied to stress, habits, or deeper mind-body patterns, hypnotherapy provides a grounded pathway to reclaim mental and physical well-being.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your First Session

Your first session is about more than simply experiencing hypnosis. It gives us time to talk about what brought you here, understand what you'd like to work on, answer your questions, and shape the experience around you.

01

We Start With a Conversation

We'll talk about what brought you in, what you'd like to work on, and what you'd like to be different. This also gives me an opportunity to learn more about you and answer any questions you have before we begin.

03

Understanding Your Suggestibility

People naturally receive and respond to suggestions in different ways. Part of your first session helps me understand how you process information and respond to suggestion so I can tailor the hypnosis experience and the language I use to you.

05

Suggestions Centered on Your Goal

The hypnotic portion of the session is shaped around what you've come in to work on. Suggestions and techniques are selected with your individual goals and responses in mind.

02

Understanding Hypnosis

Before hypnosis, I'll explain how the process works, what you can expect, and clear up common misconceptions or concerns. You'll know what we're doing before we do it.

04

Experiencing Hypnosis

I'll guide you into hypnosis using focused-attention and relaxation techniques and then help deepen that focused state. You'll remain aware and able to communicate throughout the experience.

06

Coming Back & Checking In

At the end, you'll be guided out of hypnosis and we'll have time to talk about your experience, any questions you have, and what may come next.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A Few Things You May Be Wondering

It's completely normal to have questions about hypnosis, especially if you've never experienced it before. Here are some of the things people commonly want to know before getting started.

Will I be asleep or unconscious during hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, not unconsciousness. You remain aware of what is happening and can communicate throughout the experience.

+

Can I be made to do something I don't want to do?

No. Hypnosis doesn't remove your ability to make choices or give someone else control over you. You remain an active participant throughout the process.

+

What if I don't feel hypnotized?

Hypnosis doesn't necessarily feel dramatic. Some people feel deeply relaxed, while others simply notice that their attention feels more focused. There isn't one specific feeling you're supposed to have, and experiences can vary from person to person.

+

Can everyone be hypnotized?

People vary in how they experience and respond to hypnosis. Part of your first session helps me better understand how you respond to suggestion so the experience and the language I use can be tailored to you.

+

What if I have trouble relaxing or my mind won't stop thinking?

You don't need to completely clear your mind or reach a perfect state of relaxation to experience hypnosis. Thoughts may still come and go, and that's okay. I'll guide you through the process and help redirect your attention when needed.

+

Will I remember what happens during hypnosis?

Generally, people remain aware of the session and remember what happened. Hypnosis does not automatically mean losing awareness or having no memory of the experience.

+

How many sessions will I need?

There isn't one number that applies to everyone. The number of sessions can vary depending on what you'd like to work on, your goals, and your individual response to the process. We can talk about what makes sense for you as we go.

+

Are hypnotherapy sessions online or in person?

Brooke Ashley MindWorks provides hypnotherapy sessions exclusively through Zoom, allowing you to participate from your own private, comfortable space. Before your session, you'll want to choose a quiet location where you can relax without interruptions and have a reliable internet connection.

+

Is hypnotherapy the same as therapy?

No. Hypnotherapy and psychotherapy are not the same thing. My services are provided within my training and role as a clinical hypnotherapist and are not a substitute for psychotherapy, medical care, or treatment from a licensed healthcare professional. If your needs fall outside the scope of hypnotherapy, I may recommend seeking support from an appropriately licensed professional.
